Our trip to the Singapore Zoo on 28th August 2009

Dear pupils,

Next Monday, we will be celebrating Teachers' Day.
There will be normal lessons from 7.35-9.35am.
Then, you will have double recess from 9.35-10.35am.
Following that, you will be having a class party at 10.35-12.00pm.
We will then proceed to the hall for a concert from 12.05 to 1.20pm.
You will be dismissed from school at 1.35pm.

Now, what will you be bringing for the class party?
Below are some suggestions.
Please let me know the food items that you will be bringing next Monday and i will update it below.

Racial Harmony Commemoration in HWS on 20th July 2009

Racial Harmony Day serves to remind our pupils that social division costs us dearly and that race and religion are potential fault-lines in Singapore society. It is a day for schools to reflect on, and celebrate our success as a harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of cultures and heritages.

Singapore is a nation built by people from many races and cultures. Living in harmony is therefore important and relevant to all Singaporeans as it will ensure the continued peace and prosperity that we have enjoyed for many years.

Hong Wen School commemorated Racial Harmony Day on 20th July.

P1 Learning Journey to the Singapore Zoo on 28th August 2009, 7.25am to 12.35pm.

Dear parents,

In view of the school’s vision of a holistic education, we are planning an experiential learning trip to the zoo for all primary one pupils on
28 August 2009, Friday from 7.25am to 12.35pm.

The objectives of this trip are for the pupils to:

1) learn more about animals (different types/groups).
2) integration of Science, Social Studies, Maths and Art.
3) learn interpersonal and social skills

Pupils are to assemble in school by 7.25am as usual.
They will be dismissed from school as usual at 12.35 pm.

Please ensure that your child bring the following items:
a) Raincoat/poncho
b) Cap
c) Big water bottle
d) Insect repellant/mosquito patches
e) Sunblock (to be applied at home)
f) Snacks – for e.g. sandwiches, biscuits, bread
(They will be moving from station to station and will not be able to buy food there).
***YOU must have your BREAKFAST at home.***)

The entrance fees for pupils will be fully borne by the school.

I would like to invite you to the trip if you are interested.

National Day Celebrations@HWS on 7th August 2009

Our Pledge

Overview
The National Pledge embodies the ideals for building a united Singapore. It was written in August 1966 by Mr S. Rajaratnam, the then Minister for Foreign Affairs, shortly after Singapore's independence . He believed that language, race and religion were divisive factors, but the Pledge emphasises that these differences can be overcome if Singaporeans cared enough about their country. The draft text was handed to the then Prime Mini Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who refined it before submitting it to the Cabinet for approval.

History
The National Pledge was written in the mid-1960s in the aftermath of the racial riots that had affected communal harmony in Malaysia and Singapore. Rajaratnam believed that race, language and religion were the main factors contributing to the division of the people. In wording the Pledge he sought to bring across the message that these differences can be overcome if Singaporeans were committed to and caring enough for their country. The dream for Singapore is spelt out inthe ideals of the Pledge. It calls for a sense of nationhood to be fostered despite differences, and encourages all to bring reality to the dream of building a country which all Singaporeans could be proud of.

On 25 August 1966, about 500,000 students from 529 government and aided schools recited the National Pledge, the first time the Pledge was recited in schools. Led by teachers, the recital was done at the instruction of the Ministry of Education (MOE) which then said that pupils were to observe this ceremony with solemnity and respect, and to face the National Flag with their right hands raised.

From 27 June 1988 however, students have been reciting the Pledge with their right fists clenched to their chests, a change which according to MOE was to better reflect the emotional aspect of saying the Pledge. The Pledge has since been recited on occasions of national importance such as the National Day Parade.

Our PLEDGE Moment at 8.22pm on 9 August 2009

National Day is not just about the Parade. It is an occasion for Singaporeans to reflect upon the journey we have taken – our nationhood and collective aspirations. Our Pledge encapsulates these ideas.

As children, we recited our pledge in school assemblies, as do the children today. The wisdom captured in Our Pledge has a timeless quality that has stood the test of time as Singapore transformed over the years.

On this year's National Day, we want Singaporeans to reacquaint themselves with Our Pledge. In line with that, the NDP 09 theme, show and celebration activities are all anchored on the pledge.
PLEDGE MOMENT @ 8:22 PM.

At 8:22 pm on National Day, Singaporeans are invited to Come Together for the Pledge Moment.

You can choose to shout out the Pledge as you take it, hand on chest, or you can take the pledge silently while reflecting on the deep meaning behind it. We invite all Singaporeans to take 30 seconds of their time on 8:22 pm to recite Our Pledge together.

To achieve this, we have worked with our partners to send out the signal for the Pledge Moment. If you are already tuned in to the NDP Live Broadcast on Channel 5 or 8, on Channel NewsAsia International across the region, or if you are celebrating with your local community, the sights and sounds of the NDP would build up to the pledge. If you are listening to the radio, the DJs would invite you to take the pledge. If you are dining or shopping, selected restaurants and malls would also invite you to take the pledge. If you are taking an after dinner stroll in the park or playing street soccer, the SCDF chime would sound on our public warning system to signal this moment.

Whether you are with your friends or family, or just having a quiet moment alone, wherever you are, we invite you to take our pledge together at 8:22 pm.

National Day Celebrations on Friday, 7 August 2009 from 7.25 am -10am.

Our school will be celebrating National Day on 7 August 2009 (Friday).
All pupils are to report to school as per normal (by 7.25 am) and the day’s programme will end by 10 am.
Please make the necessary transport arrangements for your child/ward.
We welcome you to join us in celebrating our nation’s 44th birthday.
On Friday, we will kickstart the day with the formal National Day Ceremony. It will be followed by the Lower Primary Sports Meet for P1 to P3 pupils.
P1 pupils are to be in their new school uniform.
P4 to P6 pupils will be participating in a concert.
P4-P6 pupils are strongly encouraged to put on a red T-shirt (with few or no prints) and their school shorts / pinafore/ skirts (girls with new uniform).
P1Kindness pupils are reminded to bring their water bottles, skipping ropes and thermometer as the school will be conducting temperature-taking exercise before the start of all activities. Please put them in a sling bag or in a small bag.
Please remember to have your breakfast before coming to school.

Here are the steps to log into the computer for your IT lessons.

1) Switch on the computer.
2) Press "Ctrl, Alt and Delete" buttons.
3) Type in your username (Birth Certificate Number) and password.

4) Make sure your location is at S-Zone.
5) Wait for the computer to log you to your account.
6) Go to "Start, Programs" & click on "Microsoft Word".
7)Finally, wait for your teacher's instructions.

Our class play - Lost At The Beach

One day, a little girl was lost at the beach. She shouted, “Mummy, Mummy! Where are you?”

She walked up and down the beach looking for her mum. She said, “I want my mum!”

Then, she saw a group of children building sandcastles. She thought her mum was there. She walked towards the children, looking right and left for her mum. She could not find her mum. She yelled, "Mummy, where did you go?”

Finally, she went to a group of children playing beach ball. She sobbed, “Have you seen my Mummy?” The children pointed to a lady sitting under an umbrella. The lost girl looked and saw her mum. She was very happy. She promised that she would not wander off on her own again.
